Choosing a natural and organic baby wipe is especially important since you will be using them after every diaper change. So how does one go about choosing the best baby wipes?

Do Baby Wipes Contain Chemicals?

Did you know most baby wipes contain a number of toxic ingredients and chemicals? Many of which include fragrances, irritants, and preservatives. To find the best natural baby wipe for your baby, it’s important to read labels carefully. A few harmful ingredients to look out for:

  1. PEG – Polyethylene glycol is a petroleum based substance that helps with absorption. There are concerns that it can be contaminated with human carcinogens.
  2. Fragrance – Reading the words fragrance can mean the same thing as reading the words hidden chemicals. Any number of chemicals such as phthalates, PEG-3, PEG-6, titanium dioxide, and some 3,000+ more.
  3. Parabens – Parabens can be added to many products as a preservative. Parabens are endocrine disruptors that can interfere with hormone production and fertility. They can also cause skin irritation and rashes from constant exposure. Parabens also accumulate in fatty tissue and will remain there indefinetly. Included under parabens are anything that ends with the word paraben, for example, methylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, and propylparaben.
  4. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – Is a foaming agent that is classified as a toxic human irritant.
  5. Methylisothiazolinine – Known as a skin irritant that can activate an immune response.  It can cause skin issues such as hives, itching, and blisters. It is also a known neurotoxin that has been banned in Canada and the European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety has stated that there is no safe level.

Are Baby Wipes Non-Toxic?

Natural baby wipes are non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and free of toxic chemicals. They should be safe to use on your baby from birth to every diaper change. These wipes should contain minimal and simple ingredients that are gentle on the skin. Soothing and comforting natural baby wipes shouldn’t irritate your baby’s skin. Organic baby wipes also do not have harsh chemicals that can pollute the planet.

What Are the Safest Wipes?

There are many “natural” brands to choose from today that make baby wipes. However, many of them still include unnecessary ingredients you should avoid. When in doubt always pick the one with the least amount of ingredients.

Natural baby wipes are one of the many baby products that you should insist to be “clean”. It’s important to know what you are putting on your baby’s delicate skin.

That is why we did the research and put together a list of highly rated organic baby wipes that are safest for your little one!

The Bottom Line

It goes without saying that baby wipes are essential for keeping messes in order. The convenience of a product that lets you wipe down a baby isn’t without its environmental consequences though. To stand up to poopy diapers and sticky hands, baby wipes need to be durable — which means, more likely than not, that they contain some sort of plastic or polyester and therefore are not biodegradable.

For those looking for a more environmentally friendly option, we suggest wipes made from wood or bamboo pulp or other natural fibers.

Even if they’re not 100 percent biodegradable, that’s still a much better option than using regular baby wipes. To choose products safer for your baby, we recommend wipes that are fragrance-free and water-based.

Happy shopping!
