At the end of this week, you’ll have just completed your first two months of pregnancy, and things will really start to pick up pace.
Things might all still feel very new to you while, at the same time, it could feel like an age has passed since you first learned of being pregnant.
At 8 weeks pregnant, the development of your baby is growing at a steady pace and is beginning to develop more features that will eventually become the defining characteristics of their face. You may also start notice an increase in early symptoms of pregnancy at week 8.
You probably have many questions at 8 weeks pregnant – when will the baby bump start to show? How big is my baby at week 8? What symptoms should I expect? 8 Weeks Pregnancy Symptoms
At around week 8 of your pregnancy, early symptoms will probably start to become more intense and you will likely start feeling some of the changes happening inside your body. The following are the most common eight-weeks-pregnant symptoms that you can expect:
- Vaginal discharge increase
A common sign of pregnancy at week 8 is an increase in vaginal discharge, or leukorrhea. This increased discharge is a result of more estrogen flowing through your body, and it will appear as a thin and slightly milky fluid. The function of leukorrhea is to stop any harmful microorganisms from damaging the birth canal.
You might have been suffering from gas and bloating in previous weeks and, by week 8 of the pregnancy, you may also become burdened with constipation. Try to keep an eye on your fiber intake if this happens to you, making sure you are getting a sufficient amount of fiber-rich vegetables and whole grains.
- Increase in breast size
This period of the pregnancy cycle is often accompanied by changes in breast size. Other changes in your breasts may include an increased pertness of the nipples, and the formation of blue veins around your breasts.
One of the most likely early signs of pregnancy at week 8 is increased fatigue. You may have experienced it in the previous weeks, and you’ll probably continue to feel varying degrees of fatigue throughout the duration of your pregnancy. A lot of your body’s energy is being redirected to the building of your baby, and the best way to counter this is to simply get as much rest as you can.
- Mood swings
Don’t worry if you are jumping from one extreme emotion to another in the matter of seconds, this is normal when you are 8 weeks pregnant. Pregnancy hormones are being jetted around your body at unprecedented levels, and this can take a huge toll on your emotional state.
Your Body at Week 8
There may still be no noticeable external differences to your body when you are eight weeks pregnant, but the symptoms you experience may make you notice some changes within your body. This week, pregnancy symptoms may start to hit you more intensely, and it could be the time that you join the three-quarters of women who suffer from morning sickness.
Though there is no hard-scientific evidence of the cause of morning sickness, many experts believe that it is caused either by the increase in estrogen and hCG coursing through your body, or by the relaxation of the digestive system caused by an increase in progesterone. The end of the first trimester (around week 12) is when these symptoms start to subside, so there is comfort in the knowledge that you’ll be through the worst of it in a month.
Baby Size at Week 8
On average, the size of your baby at 8 weeks in the womb is just over 1 centimetre (around 0.63 inches). It is small but rapidly growing, and now it will be a similar size to a raspberry.
The development of your tiny 8-week old embryo extends far beyond its size. A magnified look at your baby would reveal that it is starting to form webbed hands and feet, and with that the beginnings of little fingers and toes. The heartbeat of your baby is probably detectable at this point, too, and it’ll be beating at twice the rate of yours, at around 150 beats per minute.
Week 8 Pregnant Ultrasound
A lot of women have their first ultrasound at 8 weeks pregnant. This can be a humbling experience as there is a possibility to see how the development of the fetus at 8 weeks has been going. Though you can’t feel your baby at this point, you might be able to make out the shape of the arms, legs and feet.
A common practice for your week 8 pregnancy scan is to have your blood drawn so that your medical practitioner can check your blood type, hormone levels, and any other potential complications that could disrupt a healthy pregnancy.
Your stomach will feel no different from the outside, but the signs of pregnancy at week 8 may be starting to have an affect on the inside. This could lead to nausea and a feeling of tenderness around the stomach.
The main thing to expect during the eighth week of pregnancy is the probable increase in the intensity of any pregnancy symptoms that you have been experiencing. It’s worth noting that not all women display intense pregnancy symptoms at week 8 and, if you’re someone who hasn’t, you shouldn’t be concerned about it.

Your fetus at week 8 is only the size of a raspberry, so it is very unlikely that you will notice a baby bump from the outside at this stage.

It’s great if you are craving fruit and vegetables during pregnancy, as not many people are lucky with their desires. If you happen to be one of the few lucky ones, take advantage of it and indulge in the healthy foods packed with the essential vitamins and minerals required for a healthy pregnancy.
- Exercise smartly
It’s important to continue exercising as much as you can throughout the first trimester, but it’s equally as important to exercise smartly. Don’t overdo it. Start with something light and easy and find a gentle workout that best circumvents any of the eight-weeks-pregnant symptoms.
- Drink plenty of water
Staying sufficiently hydrated keeps your body functioning at an optimal level. This is particularly important when your blood volume is increasing by almost 50 percent and may help fend off any nasty headaches.
